Point Park Edges Bobcats in Overtime Win
Our second game was against Point Park University and we lost 93-90 in overtime.
Point Park University women's basketball pulled out an overtime win over visiting Bryant & Stratton-Rochester, 94-91, on Sunday, the first-ever varsity basketball game played on the school's campus.
Bryant & Stratton-Rochester had a couple of players who were very hard to handle with point guard Myjoi Adams tallying 34 points on 13 for 21 from the field and 6-0 center Kadijha Jones totaling 20 points, 22 rebounds and five blocks. Kathryn Kanhoye added 15 points in a hard battle that lasted all day on both sides.
The Bobcats put together a few key runs in the game to swing momentum their way each time. The final one was a 16-4 spurt that put them up 81-78 late in regulation. That's when Kirschner came up with her big trey from the top of the key to tie the game at 81-81. The Pioneers forced a turnover, called time out but could not score on the final possession of the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers fell behind, 90-85, with 1:54 left in OT on Adams' layup. Burns came up with a drive of her own to get the Pioneers closer, but they were still down, 91-87, with under a minute to go. This time it was Lexi Petit's turn to have a big shot, a 3-pointer that pulled Point Park within 91-90 with 28 seconds left.
Down one, Kirschner grabbed a steal to give the Pioneers a chance. She got the ball over to Jordan Yaniga, who was fouled on the block. Yaniga made the first free throw to tie. Then two straight lane violations by the Bobcats allowed Yaniga to take her third and fourth attempts. She made the last one to put the Pioneers in front, 92-91.
Point Park got another stop with some great defense, and Burns made two free throws to push the lead to three. The Pioneers made it three defensive stops in a row by forcing the Bobcats to miss a tying trey at the buzzer. Point Park had been using offensive and defensive lineups the final two minutes with Yaniga and Sierra Dawson providing help on the defensive end.
Petit finished with nine points, four assists and five steals. Yaniga added eight points and six rebounds and was clutch on her free throws going 6 for 6.
t was a tight game throughout with the Pioneers up 21-20 after the first quarter and 48-46 at the half. Point Park did enjoy a 37-29 lead late in the first half. That was after a 13-2 run featured three 3-pointers by Seneta and Rinn with a couple of baskets. But the Bobcats responded with a 14-2 run before the half.
The Pioneers had a 67-61 lead after three with Burns hitting from the outside and Rinn scoring down low for the lead.
Burns made four 3-pointers to give her 198 for her career. She is three away from tying Tyra James (2016-20) for most in school history at 201. Seneta made four treys, Kirschner had three and Petit two.
"This one hurt. We had the lead and let it slip away, really hurts." "Not to mention losing 3 players due to fouling out and one to an injury." "These kids fought their hearts out being shorthanded, this will make us stronger." "I am proud of them, we will be back"
