It was a fruitful trip to the Bluefield State College Big Blue Classic for the Bryant & Stratton Bobcats, narrowly missing a 2-0 weekend after earning their first victory of the year.
The Bobcats hit the century mark in their opening game against Campbellsville-Somerset, topping the Tigers 100-93 on Friday evening. Bryant & Stratton started hot with an 8-0 run and ripping off another 12-3 run on their way to closing the half with a eight-point lead.
Shandare Figgins paced the Bobcats with 22 points and Robert Davis was 4-6 from three-point range, to add 16 points off the bench. Dmitri Campbell chipped in another 15 off the bench to go along with 15 points from Deondrae Parker, 14 from Victor Caldwell and 10 from Torry Wright.
The Bobcats would need the points in a back-and-forth second half as the Tigers outscored the Bocbats 56-55 but it was enough to hold BSC’s first half lead and give them their first regular season victory of the year.
Saturday’s game against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg saw a tighter defensive affair and the Bobcats edged 76-73 in the second game of the weekend.
Bryant & Stratton didn’t get the bench scoring they received on Friday, only getting 12 points total from Marcus Zappia and Dmitri Campbell. Shandare Figgins once again led the Bobcats, putting up 26 points and adding seven rebounds. Torry Wright chipped in with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Even without the explosive offensive performance they received Friday, the Bobcats managed to keep Campbellsville quiet and giving themselves an opportunity to tie the one-possession game late.
While the shots didn’t fall on Saturday, the weekend provided the Bobcats with an excellent foundation moving forward. Friday’s victory will be something to build upon and despite the narrow loss on Saturday, the Bobcats’ good habits from the win carried over, providing a positive outlook as the season ramps up.
